Departing from Lilongwe riders begin there journey discovering the Nkhotakhota Wildlife Reserve. Voyage up the lake all the way to the northern highlands for a scenic journey through woodland escarpments & lakeshore ridges and wildlife habitats. Discover the contrasting beauty of Malawi’s northern landscape. Escapade into the bush wildlife of Nkhotakhota cycling up along the scenic lake-shore passing lakeside villages, scenic escarpments and picturesque horizons. Along the way, riders stop for refreshing overnights overlooking beautiful sunsets over the waters. Furthermore traversing across the upper rift valley to reach the magnificent altitudes of Nyika National Park. Rolling hills and wilderness grasslands. Comfortable stretches of distances and gradients reaching elevations of 2000m for a spectacular finale combining wildlife, lake-shore views and the northern rolling highlands.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Lilongwe Airport - Bua River Lodge

Today you be collected from the airport and driven to the Nkhotakhota Wildlife Reserve for a stay at Bua River Lodge. Bush walks and birding tranquility. Overnight by one of the riverside tents and enjoy a sunset as the piercing sky cools the riverside wilderness (3 hours drive). Receive your welcome starter pack and prepare your bikes for tomorrows journey.

Bua River Lodge is located just two kilometres inside the eastern boundary of Nkhotakhota Wildlife Reserve in Malawi. The reserve covers 1,800,000 hectares of largely Miombo woodland situated adjacent to the Bua River where abundant birding and wildlife can be found along its tributaries.

Day 2NKhotakhota Wildlife Reserve to Ngala Beach

Cycle today using the M5 lakeshore road towards Ngala Beach. Here you will overnight at Ngala Beach Lodge. Total cycling distance of 75km.

Ngala Beach Lodge. Welcoming place, quiet and radiates peace and tranquillity. They offer comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated rooms and chalets, friendly personal service, great food and awe inspiring views of both the lake and the Viphya Mountains

Day 3Ngala Beach to Chintheche

Cycle further down the M5 escarpment towards the coastal village of Chintheche. Here you will overnight at Chintheche INN. Total cycling distance of 75km.

Chintheche Inn – Stands on the northern shore of Lake Malawi on what is acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful of all the lake’s beaches. With a backdrop of the Viphya mountains and patches of tropical rain forest, the white sandy beaches, broken only by small rocky outcrops, stretch for miles. Accommodation is in ten brightly furnished, en suite rooms, each opening out on to the beach. Mountain biking, tour of tree nursery, village walks and non-motorized sports (kayaking and snorkeling) are included for guests.

Day 4Chintheche to Nkhata Bay

Cycle onwards today into the lakeside village of Nkhatha Bay. Here you will overnight at Mayoka Beach Lodge. Total cycling distance of 50km.

Aqua Africa has a beautiful on-site lodge with a range of accommodation and a cafe open all day, available to both guests and day visitors. Located right on the lake shore with a private beach and spectacular views of the whole bay, this is the perfect place to have a bite to eat or stay for a while to do some diving. You’ll be sure to receive a warm welcome and get plenty of travel advice and tips while you’re here. Deluxe rooms which have en-suite facilities, air conditioning and a private balcony overlooking the Lake

Day 5Nkhata Bay to Mzuzu

Continue cycling towards the town of Mzuzu. Here you will overnight at Joy’s Place. A total cycling distance of 49km.

Joy’s Place – Comes highly recommended for her delicious Korean cooking and homely atmosphere. Located in an ideal location near amenities and shops. Joy’s place offers respite and comfort in beautiful Mzuzu. Joy has a lovely menu with a lot of great options and an amazing breakfast. The rooms are comfortable and the staff is very helpful and inviting. Joy’s place offers an interesting fusion of African heritage and Korean flavour

Day 6Mzuzu to Rhumpi

Cycle onwards today along the M1 towards Rhumpi. Here you will overnight at Adios Resort. Total cycling distance of 68km.

Adios is a very suitable place to view your life from a distance. The sunny weather, the wonderful temperatures (in October and November it may be too hot for some people), the quiet life, life at “basic level” and the quiet and beautiful surroundings of Adios are good ingredients to relax and to think about things. Located off a dirt track this simple oasis offers simple accommodation, wholesome food and a peaceful setting amongst surround villages. Nearest town before entering Nyika National park with fuel stations stocked with fruit juices, snacks and basic goods.

Day 7Rhumpi to Nyika National Park

Transfer today with a scenic 3 hour drive into the gates of Nyika National Park. Sightings of antelope, zebra’s and often leopard before reaching the base of Chelinda. Here you will overnight at Chelinda Camp

Chelinda Camp. Located high on the Nyika Plateau within Nyika National Park, Chelinda Camp overlooks a crystal-clear dam with panoramic views of rolling hills, isolated ridges and open high-altitude grasslands. Accommodation at Chelinda Camp consists of two options. There are four chalets which have two bedrooms, a bathroom, lounge, dining area with a fireplace and a small kitchen. There are also six en-suite rooms with twin beds, which share a dining, bar and lounge area complete with comfortable furnishings and an inviting fireplace for those cosy nights.

Day 8Nyika National Park

Enjoy a day of activities from mountain biking, game viewing, walking trails and birding. Good gravel network in the park makes exploring by bike easy with many opportunities for sightings of animals along the way.

Nyika National Park – Montane grasslands rise 8000ft/ 2400m above sea level, home to zebra, countless antelope (including roan, reedbuck and eland), hyena and elephant as well as nearly 400 species of birds. Nyika is also renowned for legendary leopard sightings and many guests have had the opportunity to observe these majestic cats thriving in their natural environment- Activities available at the camp include game drives, guided walks, mountain biking, birding, fly fishing and the popular Livingstonia Trail. Guests can also visit a nearby school and meet local community members during their stay.

Day 9 Nyika N.P to Viphya Plateau

Enjoy the morning with a choice of activities to choose from either a leisurely walk trail, mountain biking, canoeing, birding or fly fishing. Afterwards at 10h00 you will transfer by vehicle to the Viphya Forest arriving around sunset for a lovely drink and dinner as a roaring wood log fire ambers in lounge. Here you will overnight at the Luwawa Forest Lodge

Luwawa Forest Lodge – Set in a natural surrounding of pine trees enclosed around a reservoir dam leading into beautiful forest trails. The latest addition to the facilities is a Sauna & bush shower. Luwawa has prolific birdlife and antelope can be seen close to the lodge. Further afield are monkeys, baboons, leopards and hyenas. Numerous activities are offered such as squash, canoeing, abseiling, orienteering and mountain biking.

Day 10Viphya Plateau to Lilongwe

After a lovely forest sun lighted morning breakfast Walk the poachers forest trail from the lodge before final drive (4 hours) along the undulating M1 to Lilongwe international airport or further travel arrangements
