7 Day Southern Explorer Cycle Tour

Cycle through tea plantations, rural farmlands and descend along the Shire River valley into wildlife reserves

OVERVIEW

Discover and travel southern Malawi by bike with this cycle tour. Begin beneath the highest peak in central Africa. Situated in the tea growing regions of Mulanje. Start here and cycle exploring the rural countryside of Malawi’s farmlands, tea plantations and shire river wildlife. Cycle across the southern tea hills and vast cultivated plantations of Thyolo where Satemwa’s historically beautiful estate invites you for a step back in tea history, indulge in exquisite tea tasting delicate handcrafted tea flavours and freshly baked cookie, cakes & scones. Continue further through the capital city of Blantyre and descend into panoramic views of the lower shire river valley.  Follow through to the river wetlands, sugar cane fields and countryside crop farms. Finally the rider will reach the southern wildlife reserves & dry savannah bush habitats of Lengwe National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve. Abundant wildlife game view in natural Mopane woodlands and river banks. Expect many species of antelope,  monkeys elephants, crocodiles and various birdwatchers delights for peaceful nights by the Shire River.

Chileka International Airport – Mulanje

Arrival today in Malawi. Friendly airport meet and greet. Afterwards proceed with a short transfer (2hrs) through the beautiful tea growing regions of Thyolo to Mulanje. Here you will stay in the tea plantations with astonishing views of Mt. Mulanje. Overnight at Africa Wild Truck Lodge & Camp.

Africa Wild Truck – Situated amongst the tea plantations of Mulanje. This cosy Italian owned lodge & camp offers neatly decorated en-suite rooms each with there own fireplace. A hiker’s dorm rooms for groups with warm showers and electric powered campsites. Spacious garden where dinners and night fires are lit shaded by trees and trimmed tea hedges. The restaurant serves delicious set meals each freshly prepared handmade and guest can choose to pick up selection of locally produced organic goods in there shop.

Enjoy breakfast then cycle today for 71km along the tea growing estates of Malawi’s finest tea plantations, forest woodlands and scenic rolling hillsides. Here you will overnight at the Huntingdon House.

Huntingdon House – Situated on the slopes of Thyolo Mountain – surrounded by vast acreage of tea plantations, indigenous woodlands and mountainous scenery. This historical building offers old world charm in a magical setting in one of Malawi’s most beautifully preserved regions. Cycle through generations of family owned tea acreage and discover the Satemwa Tea & Coffee estate.

Cycle today for 26km to Chimwenya Game Park. Here you will overnight at Game Haven Lodge. Choose to do an afternoon activity, game drive, mountain bike trail, guided walk and enjoy the the rest of the afternoon by the swimming pool enjoying sundowners.

Game Haven Lodge – Set within 220 hectares of indigenous forest woodlands. Fully furnished En-suite Nyala rooms with an open veranda view. Guest can relax and enjoy a relaxing sunset after a day of fun filled activities. From game drives within the mopane woodlands, birdwatching, Lake Bumbwe and mountain biking in the Chimwenya Park. Enjoy wildlife and various species of antelope such as sable, impala and eland. Excellent in-house services and with the Ambrosia restaurant guest can retreat to delicious country hospitality

Enjoy breakfast then prepare to cycle today for 38km to Fisherman’s Rest. Here you will overnight on a bed & breakfast basis.

Fisherman’s Rest –  Fisherman’s Rest was purchased in 1997 by the Chichlowscy family. Since then it has changed from a family home to a family run lodge, which supports long standing community programmes. Fisherman’s Rest is set within an enchanting 500 acre forest with breath-taking views over the Great Rift Valley and very own nature reserve

Enjoy breakfast continue to cycle today for 54km to Lengwe National Park. Here you will overnight at Nyala Lodge on a bed and breakfast basis.

Nyala Lodge – Situated within the Lengwe National Park. The Nyala lodge provides rustic but charming accommodation. The surrounding nature of precarious wildlife and dry terrain creates a nice seclusion for relaxing in an authentic bush atmosphere.

Room: En-suite Chalet (B&B)


Cycle onwards today for 46km to the banks of the mighty Shire river. Here you will overnight at the Ngona Lodge. Located adjacent to the Majete Wildlife Reserve. Guest can enjoy serene river safaris, bushwalks and game drives.

Ng’ona Lodge

Ideally located next to the boundaries of the Majete Wildlife Reserve. Here guest can relax and unwind to the sounds of bush life along the river. With an infinity pool, green camping sites, deluxe lodging and a la carte restaurant overlooking the Shire waters.

After a morning breakfast. Enjoy three game viewing activities in the Majete Wildlife Reserve. A morning game drive through the woodlands along the river, guided bushwalk trails and an afternoon boat safari encountering pristine wildlife & birding of the Shire River.

Majete Wildlife Reserve

A dense wildlife oasis bordered the Shire River with prolific species of birds and antelope including elephants, leopards, rhino, buffalo and with the introduction of lions. One of the only parks to see the big five. Visitors can explore the reserve in there own vehicle or on a guided drive on of the safari vehicles accompanied by a professional wildlife guide. Other activities included guided bush walks or bird walks, hiking to the top of Majete Hill, visiting the Kapichiri Falls and game-viewing hides.


Enjoy a leisurely morning sunrise and breakfast overlooking the riverside. Final goodbyes as you make your way on a scenic drive to the Blantyre Airport for flight departure (2 hours drive)
